My Letter To Someone Who Has Helped Me Through My Epilepsy Journey

Dear Eric Church,

I have been following you since you first began releasing songs, and I know how important it is for you to connect a melody with a memory. Your songs have their own meaning in my life as I continue to battle my epilepsy journey. You never disappoint when it comes to writing songs and performing on stage, and that’s why I wanted to write this letter.

Epilepsy has been a part of my life for many years now and I don’t know how I would overcome the hard days without your songs. I remember staying up until midnight just to listen to your Mr. Misunderstood album. That album is what got me through some of the toughest times battling my epilepsy. Being three hours away from home at college and dealing with multiple seizures a day, I would go back to my dorm and listen to “Record Year” and “Round Here Buzz” over and over to calm myself down. Whether it was for 30 minutes or two hours, I can vividly remember sitting on my bed listening to your music and feeling my seizures subside. Every time I hear songs from Mr. Misunderstood, I remember the days of overcoming my seizures while being away from family.

When you released Desperate Man, it became a household favorite as it was on repeat numerous times. Being in the working world while dealing with epilepsy you need a way to relieve some stress, and that album did it. You can find me in my room listening to “Some Of It” remembering that things happen in various ways from hard work to learning over time. “Drowning Man” is also a song you will find me listening to getting that message of hard work is always better. Whether I’m sitting at my desk writing or in my room meditating, songs like “Some Of It” and “Drowning Man” are always on.

With all that said, the best part about it all is seeing you perform it live on stage. I don’t go to many concerts, but I always make sure I make it to yours. From the concert in Buffalo, NY to the Double Down concert in Pittsburgh, PA, you always pour your heart and soul into your show. I appreciate all that you have done with your music, and I can’t wait to overcome my epilepsy with more of your songs.

Sincerely,

Kyle Kieffer

P.S - I can successfully say I’ve turned my entire family into Eric Church fans!
